Bible Study: Isaiah 7 / Matthew 1

This series on Isa 7/Matt 1 is a five-parter. In it, we explore the relationship between the Isaian prophecy of the child Immanuel in Isa 7:14 and the reference to this prophecy in Matt 1:23. The question we will ask and answer is: Is immediately thinking about Jesus as this child whom, according to Isa 7:14, his mother will call Immanuel, giving Isaiah the best opportunity to express fully what he is intending to express? I say no! Come with me as we explore together the relationship between Isa 7:14 and Matt 1:23.

Part 1: Historical Background

In the first video, we will look at the historical background of Isa 7. In our second video, we will look specifically at the text of Isa 7, focusing on v. 3 (a critical verse in developing one's understanding of v. 14). In our third video, we'll look at two very important texts that impact the Immanuel prophecy, Deut 18 and Isa 8. In our fourth video, we'll explore the connection between Matt 13 and Isa 6 and their impact on Isa 7:14. Finally, in our fifth video, we'll take a closer look at Matt 1, especially vv. 21-25 in order to recognize why the writer of Matthew's gospel may have referenced the prophecy in Isa 7:14 and how that reference fits into Matthew's over-arching purpose.

 

Part 2: Isaiah Chapter 7
